For 40 years, Judy Swasey has been a nurse and a runner. It was only
natural for her to put the two together. Swasey is a nurse practitioner
in surgical oncology and founder of Sole Sisters, an annual 14-week
program geared toward helping women train and get ready to run or walk the Susan Komen Race for the Cure in Raleigh.
“I think it’s a privilege to be part of someone’s life when they’re
going through cancer treatment,” she says. “It’s challenging work. But
it’s rewarding. As a nurse practitioner, I approach patients from a holistic view and try to take into account their entire lives when I first meet them and throughout their care.”
With Sole Sisters, she gets to be a role model and promote her love of running while helping patients get fit. Exercising is good for the mind, body and spirit, she says, and has been proven to help reduce the risk for many diseases and help patients recover faster.
”I am proud of many accomplishments throughout my career- but I am most proud of my amazing patients and their families and all of those women, past and present, who call themselves Sole Sisters.”
